Professional Art Pre-Sized Cradled Panels

Cradled Panels can be painted on directly if sized with PVA to prevent SIDs (brown leaching upwards into the paint) if painting with acrylics, or if painting with oil, to prevent oil leaching  down into the substrate. Unlike any other cradled panels on the market, these cradled panels are sized. If you are not guessing, these ready to paint and are sound with either medium.

Gessoing provides an intermediate layer between the sizing, and the paint that will adhere well to both and provide an ideal slip for your painting style. Golden Acrylic Gesso is perfect for acrylics and most oil painters. Oil painters who want a more slippery surface, without laying down an imprimatura glaze to get one, would prefer Gamblin Oil Ground.

Note that it is even a better idea for the longevity of your painting to stretch fabric over a cradled panel. On an uncovered wood panel, If ever in the future the artwork drops on a corner, art conservators warn that the corner is usually irreparable (especially masonite). If the actual substrate for the paint however is fabric, it is flexible and will take the hit better than wood or masonite and will be more repairable. An under-substrate that is unglued or glued with a reversible glue can easily be replace in the centuries ahead.

Cradled panels are an ideal substrate for stretched canvases - easier to work with than flat panels with less warpage because of  the cradles. All panels are much better than canvases over stretcher bars which leave paintings inadequately supported.  Art conservators strongly recommend inflexible supports.
